7. Withnail and I (1987)

Withnail and I (1987) is a black comedy produced in Great Britain which story centers around the life of two jobless actors (Withnail and ‘I’) who live together in an apartment in 1960s Camden Town. But the plot really kicks in when the unlucky pair decides to spend the weekend at a country cottage belonging to Withnail’s uncle.

The film makes you laugh at first. Some critics even say that the opening scenes are the funniest part of it. But (spoiler alert) as with black comedies, expect a sudden change in mood as the film progresses on. Without giving away anything, the end is said to be one of the most heartbreaking moments in cinema.

6. The Jerk (1979)

The Jerk (1979) stars Steve Martin in the peak of his comedic career.

The main gag of the film is in its premise. Its main character Navin, played by Martin, believe that he is a poor black child in Mississippi. The catch is that, of course, Navin is actually a white man.

Discovering he is white, he decides to live home to ‘find himself’. His soul searching is pushed on overdrive after he sees his name printed on a newspaper while working at a gas station.

Now, we won’t tell you the entire story as this film is better watched than reading about.

5. Groundhog Day (1983)

It’s hard to find anybody who hasn’t seen Groundhog Day (1983) yet as it’s one of the most popular and quoted comedy movies of all time.

The film is about a cynical weather reporter, played by Bill Murray, who seems to be trapped to repeat the same day over and over again. It’s funny to think that there are fans who emulate the film by their repetitive watching of it.

More than 30 years after its release, Groundhog Day still endures as a very watchable film probably because it hits one of life’s truths spot on life can be boring and repetitive but its love and kindness that would make it worth living.

4. Annie Hall (1977)

Annie Hall (1977) is probably Woody Allen’s most popular comedy film. Every art and film student has probably watched it countless times. Not surprising since its hilarious and neurotic takes on the romantic comedy genre are one of the best comedy movie ever made.

In case you haven’t watched it yet, the film follows a couple played by Diane Keaton (the titular Annie) and Woody Allen himself and their relationship. A fair warning: the film is said to be autobiographical as Keaton and Allen were real life ex-lovers.

3. Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)

Life of Brian is perhaps Monty Python’s magnum opus.

It tackles the controversial topic of religion and faith in their signature satiric but intelligent comedy. The plot follows, Brian, who was ‘almost the Messiah’ being born in a nearby manager on the same day as Jesus Christ.

We see him grow up on the sidelines of Jesus’ life in Roman-occupied Jerusalem and eventually become a prophet himself (although accidentally).

While it surely ruffled a few Catholic feathers with its ‘sacrilegious’ portrayal of the life of Jesus Christ as it related to Brian’s, it’s a must watch for every person looking for a laugh or two Catholic or not.

2. Airplane! (1980)

Airplane! (1980) is a satirical comedy film that parodies the disaster film genre that gained popularity in the 1970s. It was created by the same people who made other comedy greats such as Naked Gun and Hot Shots.

As its title implies, the film is set inside an airplane in flight from Los Angeles to Chicago. The film follows various plot lines but is primarily about a former fighter pilot with a drinking problem trying to win back his girlfriend who is an attendant on the flight they’re on. It is one of the most popular and best comedy movies of all time.
