Akon was born on April 16, 1973 in St. Louis, a city in Missouri in the United States to African Muslim parents of Senegalese descent. Akon age is 47 years. His father Mor Thiam is a percussionist while his mother Kin Gueye Thiam, a professional dancer.

Akon did not spend all of his childhood in the US though as his family moved back to Senegal sometimes at his early age before returning to the States when he was seven. Akon attended Bayon High and Henry Snyder High school in New Jersey.
