He passed the entrance test of Pakistan Navy and due to issues back at home; he gave up on his dream of becoming a first-class cricketer and joined Pakistan Navy as a Sailor. In Pakistan Navy, he got a chance to play as an opening Batsman which he availed and got noticed by Nazim Khan, the coach of the team. Nazim Khan was able to see that spark in Fakhar Zaman and discovered his hidden talent. Nazim Khan took Fakhar Zaman to Azam Khan to further polish his skills. Azam Khan was famous in the city for developing the skills of young cricket talent and looked for the best platform for young passionate cricketers.
Fakhar Zaman was successful in creating a strong and positive first impression on Azam Khan. He scored his first half-century while playing an Inter-District under 19 match in Asghar Ali Shah Stadium, which included 4 sixes. Nazim Khan was convinced that instead of serving Pakistan Navy, Fakhar Zaman’s future was in the field of Cricket. Nazim Khan submitted an application to Pakistan Navy Officials to include Fakhar Zaman in Pakistan Navy’s Professional Cricket Team though father’s family was not happy with what was happening Nazim Khan stuck to his motive.
Fakhar joined Pakistan Navy’s Cricket Team as a Professional Cricketer in 2008. He represented Karachi under 19 and Under 23 teams before becoming a part of the first-class cricketer. As per his coach Nazim Khan, Fakhar, no doubt he is a hard-working cricketer who focuses on his game. And one example of his hard work is the several numbers of hours he spent in front of the bowling machine that threw the ball at a speed of 95 miles per hour so that he has a strong grip on how to play the right shot. But due to financial problems back at his home and the failures that he faced in his field, made him question his abilities and his future in the field of cricket.
In this difficult phase of his life, Azam Khan was always there to support him and boost his morale. Many times he thought about leaving the cricket field for good, one time he was playing a Senior District Tournament and he was not able to score more than 25 runs in first 3 matches which made him lose faith and he wanted to go back but Azam Khan was insistent that he would not drop Fakhar Zaman from the team. In the next 3 matches, he was able to score 150 runs in each match and was able to reach the top position on Karachi Score Board. After this instance, he never looked back and did not think about leaving Cricket.
Fakhar was impatient to play first-class cricket; he was looking for easy ways to enter Domestic Circuit which proved to be a huge mistake and caused him to move back to Mardan. As per him, he tried to play for Mardan but he was not mature enough, and there was a lot of competition in Mardan. Fakhar thought of it as an easy way to get noticed, but it turned the other way around. Azam Khan was upset about his leaving Karachi and did not talk to him for next six months, but when he talked to Fakhar, he asked him to play for Karachi and perform best that is the only way to get noticed, and media also supports such players.
Fakhar Zaman International Debut
He went back to Karachi in 2011 and debuted in international Defense Cricket Challenge that took place in Australia in the year 2012; this championship is sort of a world cup for Military Forces. Fakhar Zaman helped his team to reach Finals and Pakistan won the trophy. This was Fakhar Zaman’s last match that he played for Pakistan Navy.
In 2013, he left Pakistan Navy as Professional Cricketer and joined HBL. Fakhar Zaman was ignored for the first edition of PSL despite having an average of 31.31 in T20. Pakistan Cup proved to be a turning point in the cricket career of Fakhar Zaman where he scored 297 runs in 5 matches at an average of 59.4.
He played in 2017 against West Indies in Twenty 20 match, and that was his debut in T20. In 2017 he was selected in ICC trophy, and he made his debut in ODI while playing against South African and scored 31 runs. In the finals against India, he made a century and became a first batsman who scored a century in ICC final.
