He used to study in Whangarei Boys High school and then went to King’s College, Auckland for higher studies. He was very good in his studies but being a younger cricket star, he didn’t pursue his education but worked hard to improve his performance as a cricketer.

Southee started his career by playing for New Zealand’s Under-19 team from 2006 to 2009. Southee was only 17 years old when he debuted in 2006 ICC World Cup against Bangladesh. He also got a chance to perform against Pakistan, Ireland and other teams with an average score of more than 25 per innings. By the time of second under-19 world cup, Tim had already played in 2 Twenty20 international matches.
